How Much Is My MTG Collection Worth? A Practical Guide

By Foilio Team

Every Magic: The Gathering player asks this question sooner or later. Maybe you found your old binder from years ago, maybe you’re wondering if that box of bulk hides a gem, or maybe you just want to know what your collection is doing while you keep adding to it. The honest answer: most collections are worth more than their owners think, and almost nobody knows their real number. Here’s how to find yours.

Why Your Collection’s Value Matters

Knowing what your cards are worth isn’t just curiosity. It changes real decisions:

  • Insurance. A collection worth thousands should be documented. If anything happens to it, a list with values is the difference between a payout and a shrug.
  • Trading. You can’t make a fair trade if you don’t know what you’re giving away.
  • Selling. Whether it’s one card or the whole collection, sellers who know current prices simply get more money.
  • Collecting itself. Watching your collection’s value grow is half the fun. Some cards quietly double while you’re not looking.

What Actually Determines a Card’s Price

Before you start counting, it helps to know what moves the numbers:

Rarity is a starting point, not the answer. Mythics are usually worth more than commons, but plenty of mythics are worth cents and some uncommons cost more than a booster box. Demand decides, not the symbol on the card.

Foils live in their own market. A foil version of the same card can be worth two times, five times, or twenty times more than the regular one. If you’re not counting your foils separately, your total is wrong.

Prices move constantly. Card prices react to tournament results, reprints, new set releases, and pure hype. A price you looked up last year tells you very little today. This is why a one-time count goes stale so fast, and why tracking prices over time beats any single lookup.

Condition and language matter too. Near mint cards in English typically set the reference price. Played copies sell for less, and some non-English versions for more.

The Manual Way: Spreadsheets and Price Lookups

The traditional approach looks like this: go through your cards, look each one up on Cardmarket or TCGplayer, and type the price into a collection spreadsheet. It works, and for a stack of twenty cards it’s fine.

For a real collection it falls apart quickly. A thousand cards means a thousand lookups. Foil and regular versions double the work. And the day you finish, the prices already started drifting. A spreadsheet gives you a snapshot of the past, not the value of your collection today.

The Better Way: Let an App Do the Counting

This is exactly the problem collection trackers solve, and exactly why we built Foilio. Instead of maintaining a spreadsheet, you do three things:

  1. Add your cards by scanning them. Point your camera at a card and Foilio recognizes it, including the exact set and collector number. You can scan card after card without stopping, so even a large binder is done in one sitting.
  2. Mark what you own. Regular and foil versions are tracked separately, including multiple copies of the same card.
  3. Read the number. Your dashboard shows the total value of your collection in euros or dollars, updated with current market prices every day.

From there, the interesting part begins. Foilio shows you a chart of your collection’s value over time, so you can see whether the last month treated your cards well. It highlights the biggest price movers, so you notice when one of your cards spikes. And if you want the data outside the app, you can export everything to Excel or JSON in a couple of taps, which also covers the insurance documentation problem.

Don’t Forget the Cards You Want

Valuing a collection has a flip side: what would it cost to finish it? Foilio’s wishlist binders answer that. Add the cards you’re hunting for and the binder shows you the current total cost of everything you’re missing, with daily price updates. When a card on your wishlist drops in price, that’s your moment to buy.

So, How Much Is Your Collection Worth?

There’s only one way to find out, and it no longer takes a weekend with a spreadsheet. Download Foilio, scan your first binder, and get a real number backed by current market prices. Most collectors are surprised. Some are very pleasantly surprised.

Foilio is available on the App Store. Your collection is probably worth more than you think.
